Streamwatch UK is an environmental project which encourages observation of local rivers by the use of analytical test kits to produce good data on water quality which is subsequently fed into a central database on the internet.
The project is ideal for field work in KS3 (especially after Yr 9 SATs) KS4 and AS/A level Chemistry.

The RSC Analytical Division N.W. Region has purchased several test kits and these are available on loan to schools in the region.

What can the kits be used for?
temperature / conductivity / pH / turbidity / dissolved oxygen / nitrate / hardness / ammonia / phosphate / copper and zinc / chlorine.

Temperature and conductivity are measured using probes but most tests are carried out by the addition of a tablet to the water which produces a colorimetric reaction which is measured against reference coloured disks.
