Hon. Secretary: Stuart Forbes

Welcome to the website of the North West Region of the Analytical Division of the Royal Society of Chemistry. We hope you enjoy your visit and will keep returning to see the latest news about current activities including our programme of meetings and schools events.

Our main remit is to promote analytical science at all levels in the region by arranging activities involving school children, students, practising and retired chemists. We also aim to enhance communication between our ~1,200 members who are spread throughout the region from the Scottish Border to Mid-Wales.

The current region was established over forty years ago when the former North of England Section of the Society of Analytical Chemistry was split into two sections. More information about the history of our region can be found in our booklet entitled
A Lifetime of Analysis, a copy of which can be downloaded here.

2013 Long Service Members Lunch

West Cheshire College, Ellesmere Port
Thursday 16 May 2013

West Cheshire College

The 2013 Long Service Members Lunch, held at West Cheshire College on 16 May, was attended by around 70 members and guests from the region. As indicated by Ted Adlard during his introduction, this was the 28th consecutive year that this highly successful annual event has taken place. Moreover, unlike some other RSC groups who have started to hold similar events in recent years, the N.W. Region Lunch remains a free event for our Long Service Members.

Following a very enjoyable lunch, during which members were able to catch up on news from friends and former colleagues, Dr. Ian Cubbin from Liverpool John Moores University gave a very informative and concise illustrated talk entitled "Pharmacy in the Workhouse". His presentation focussed on the Infirmary of the Birr Workhouse in Ireland during the 19th century and included details of several Victorian medicinal recipes such as "blackdrop" and "fever powder". Ian illustrated how the number of inmates at the workhouse, which was designed for 800, fluctuated dramatically reaching a peak of over 2000 during the time of the Irish Potato Famine when a cholera epidemic also swept the country.

Many thanks to Ted Adlard and Alan Handley for organising a very enjoyable event.

N.W. Region Schools take the honours again in the 2012 National Final of Schools Analyst Competition

We are delighted to report on the continued success of our schools in the National Schools Analyst Competition. Competing against schools from across the UK, Arnold School from Blackpool, who took second place in the 2011 national final, won this year's national final which was held in Bristol at the end of June. Moreover, Altrincham Grammar School for Boys took third place in the national final making it a tremendous result for our region and we congratulate both teams for a great performance.

N.W. Region Schools have now taken first and second places in the 2011 national final and first and third places in the 2012 national final. In acknowledging this great achievement, we would like to thank the students and teachers from all schools in our region who participated in the competition, the organisers and staff involved in hosting the four regional heats (see below), and our sponsors throughout the region for their generous support to this event.
